We held hands on our way back to campus, the heat of Royalâs palm completely saturating mine. I didnât mind that his hand was a little damp. If anything, it grounded me, knowing this was all new for him, too. He navigated the car smoothly with one hand, while I got lost in the shadowed blur of trees as we passed them, feeling more alive than I ever had before. Breathing in the soft, electronic music as it played through his speakers, stealing its beats to mute the percussion of my own heart. I wanted to hear him breathing, hear this moment. This moment where I had become something tangible, someone actually living inside the shell. My fingertips buzzed and my heart hammered, and he was the song I never wanted to stop listening to.
With the lights of the town peeking their way around the next bend, I shut my eyes and made myself catalog everything that had happened tonight. I loved that I smelled like him, his sweatshirt hugged my arms and chest, time had softened the fabric, but it was Royal whoâd left his warmth inside it for me. I tasted my lips, hoping to get a trace of his mint flavor, but it was gone. I could almost feel the pressure of his lips, like the way my fingertips pressed against the keys of the piano, delicate at first. Precise until passion took over and all you had left was need. The need to pursue, to chase the feeling only music had given me.
Until Royal.
The song ended and the next began as the car slowed. I opened my eyes and realized we were almost to St. Peterâs as we passed Stacks. The windows were lit and a few patrons dotted the sidewalk outside the front door of the bar. My eyes snagged on a couple, a boy and a girl, meandering down the narrow concrete path, hand in hand, and I wondered if Royal and I would ever be able to do that. Heâd openly held my hand that one night, but he could have easily blamed the alcohol. Would we ever be public like that couple, and for that matter, were we even a couple? I watched him as he hummed along to the song from his playlist, and he turned to face me, a small smile growing on his lips. I really liked those lips. The first lips Iâd ever kissed. I wondered then, if he had been able to tell, if he knew how special tonight had been⦠for me.
âIâve never kissed anyone before⦠before you.â The confession was a rush of words and nerves.
He glanced at me briefly, taking his eyes off the road. âI figured.â
Embarrassment flooded through me. âThat bad, huh?â
He chuckled and squeezed my hand. âOh, God, no. I didnât mean⦠I just figured when you said youâd never had a boyfriend⦠or anything.â The car rolled to a stop. The looming trees outside of Warren House gave us a small amount of privacy as he turned off the engine.
